Working from home offers a lot of benefits to the modern professional. Many jobs can be done fully from home or with limited time at the office. Working from home allows you to spend more time with family and avoid a long commute and lost time in traffic. If you’re thinking of setting up a home office, keep the following features in mind!
What Features Should Your Home Office Have?
The right entryway into your home office helps you get into work mode when you enter. Though open plans may work for some, the presence of a door helps many differentiate this space between home and work and allows them to get ready to take on the tasks of the day.
Power for Technology
Especially in older homes, you might not have the outlets or other technological necessities such as a high-speed internet port or phone jack that are necessary for working from home. If you have a room that already has these components and can easily be converted into a home office, all the better. Otherwise you’ll need to think about the power you’ll need to get your home office moving.
Sound control helps you block out extraneous sounds coming from the house so you can focus on your work. The ideal flooring for sound control is carpet, which absorbs and muffles sounds. If you prefer hardwood, try using area rugs to absorb some of the sound. Solid-core doors and curtains help muffle sound, and for a more targeted approach, you can use sound-proofing panels or mats.
Stale air in a home office gets old quickly. Ideally, the room for your home office will already have an HVAC vent. If it doesn’t, you may want to use a fan or room air conditioner.
If you can, try to incorporate natural lighting into your home office. You’ll also need ambient lighting for the room as a whole, in addition to task lighting to light up whatever you’re focused on at the moment.
