3 Factors to Consider Before Selecting Your Kitchen Sink

Designing the purpose, configuration, and materials for your new kitchen sink is essential before you plan your kitchen design.

Every home improvement project requires many small decisions. Kitchen remodels, in particular, demand many choices, from lighting to appliances, to the backsplash and cabinetry. Every little selection adds up to your new, attractive kitchen design, so you must give every decision its due. If your kitchen remodel will include installing a new sink, you must consider the material, configuration, and style of your new kitchen sink carefully.

Kitchen Sink Materials

There are a few primary kitchen sink materials to choose from, which offer different benefits depending on what you need for your kitchen design.

Stainless Steel

A popular choice, stainless steel sinks are durable and fit with nearly every kitchen style. The metal may be scratched, but it can also be buffed out. New stainless steel sinks are quieter than traditional models, and they are generally easy to clean.

Porcelain

These sinks are attractive and come in many different color choices. They work best in traditional-style kitchens, but they do need to be treated gently as the material can chip and be scuffed easily.

Composite

Composite sinks are resistant to chips and scratches, and they won’t show watermarks. These sinks are natural to take care of but can be expensive.

Cast Iron

A cast iron kitchen sink is durable and less noisy than other sinks, and they come in a variety of different colors.

Kitchen Sink Configuration

With dishwashing machines now commonplace, you can be flexible with your sink configuration.

One Kitchen Sink Basin

The single kitchen sink basin is increasing in popularity. It’s attractive and offers a streamlined, simple look. It’s versatile and allows for a lot of activity at once, and you can buy add-ons to make food prep easier.

Two-Basin Sinks

This traditional model is an option, but now you have the choice of choosing between two equal-sized basins or two basins of different sizes. Dual basins with a smaller sink allow for food prep to happen simultaneously with cleanup, but the small basin isn’t ideal for soaking large pots and pans. Two equal-sized basins offer a symmetrical design and allow for soaking while prepping.

Triple-Bowl Sinks

This configuration gives you two large bowls, with a small basin in the middle for food prep.

Kitchen Sink Style

There are countless kitchen sink styles available now, so you can do extensive research to find your ideal kitchen sink design. However, a few of the most popular are:

  • The Farmhouse sink
  • Self-rimming sinks
  • Undermount sinks
  • Integrated Quartz sinks
  • Prep sinks for kitchen islands
