How to Survive Your Kitchen Makeover

Planning simple meals ahead of time will make the kitchen remodeling process easier.

Planning simple meals ahead of time will make the kitchen remodeling process easier.

A kitchen remodel is an incredibly valuable investment in your home, but living through the remodeling process isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. If you’re someone who does a lot of at-home cooking, a kitchen makeover can be incredibly inconvenient and might send you over the edge. But it doesn’t have to! Planning ahead can make your kitchen makeover smooth and headache free. Here are a few things to make life easier while you upgrade your kitchen space.

  • Designate a kitchen stand-in area. The first thing you should do when undergoing a kitchen remodel is set up a space that you can use as a temporary stand-in kitchen. If you’re not someone who wants to eat out everyday, having an extra space to make lunches a brew a cup of coffee will be a blessing in disguise.
  • Stick to simple meals. No matter what you do, a kitchen remodel is likely to disrupt your regular cooking and eating habits. While you might normally love to cook ambitious meals, it’s a good idea to stick to the basics while your kitchen is being worked on. Stash away the nonessentials and keep the kitchen tools/appliances you can’t live without. Now is also a good time to invest in some portable appliances like mini fridges, toaster ovens, grills and microwaves.
  • Stock up on disposables. Seeing as how you won’t have much access to the dishwasher, make sure your pantry is stocked up with plenty of disposable plates, silverware, and cups. This will help you cut down on the cleanup process. Also keep plenty of nonperishable snack items on hand so you can have something to bite on without the need to create a meal.
  • Get out of the house. A kitchen remodel is a good excuse to visit friends, family, and take vacations. As long as you stay in touch with your contractor, getting out of the house for a little while could do you some good. And alternatively, if the weather is cooperating, why not put the grill to work?
