Refrigerator Types and Features

Side-by-side refrigerators often feature water and ice dispensers.

If you’re looking to do a kitchen remodeling, upgrading your refrigerator can be a worthwhile investment. The refrigerator is perhaps the most important appliance in any kitchen, as it’s what keeps your food chilled and safe to eat over an extended duration of time. With such a wide range of refrigerator models on today’s market, it’s understandable that it can be difficult to make a decision. Here’s a quick look into various refrigerator styles and capacities.

Top Freezer

The most common type of refrigerator features the freezer above the refrigerator section. It provides a spacious interior, and is an incredibly economical option. For most homeowners with basic needs, a top freezer refrigerator will work just fine. The only disadvantage is that you will have to bend down to reach the refrigerator section, and the freezer portion can be difficult to reach for shorter folks.

Bottom Freezer

As you might imagine, a bottom freezer refrigerator is the exact opposite of the top freezer refrigerator — with the freezer located on the bottom. These refrigerators make food easier to reach without bending over, and the freezer door can pull out or swing open. If affordability and convenience is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with a bottom freezer refrigerator.

Side-By-Side

In a side-by-side refrigerator, the freezer and refrigerator are placed directly next to one another. This puts both frozen and refrigerated food within easy reach, and design makes larger plates and platters more accessible. These refrigerators commonly feature ice and water dispensers, and are particularly nice for narrower kitchens where clearance area is important.

French Door

The most versatile and luxurious refrigerator option, the French door style combines convenience with flexibility by featuring both a bottom freezer section and two side-by-side refrigerator sections. This is the best style if you have lots of kitchen space to work with. It’s also a great option for people who want the convenience of an eye level refrigeration compartment. Although perhaps not the most economical option, French door refrigerators provide the most amount of storage, style, and energy saving benefits.
