Tile Flooring Options for Your York Kitchen Remodel

Tile is the classic kitchen flooring material, and homeowners are still very enamored with tile kitchen floors. The classic look of tile, combined with its durability and practicality, make it a great all-around solution for kitchen flooring.

Of course, there are lots of different types of materials that can be used to make a tile floor. Ceramic and natural stone are the two overarching categories of tile flooring materials, and within these categories we find everything from clay to granite. So in this week’s blog, we’re going to talk about the different types of tile flooring materials, and which work best for your York kitchen remodel!

Natural Stone

Granite

Granite works as well in the kitchen for flooring as it does for your countertop. Granite is a highly durable material, and is scratch and stain resistant once it is sealed and polished.

Slate

Slate is another good choice for kitchen tile flooring, because it can stand up to the high volume of traffic that the kitchen gets. Slate also has a nice natural texture that will give the floor a unique aesthetic appeal.

Limestone/Travertine

Limestone and travertine (a type of limestone) look nice, but aren’t ideal for the kitchen. That’s because they’re less dense than other types of natural stone, and scratch and stain easily.

Marble

Marble is another natural stone that, while it looks beautiful, isn’t ideal for the floor. It’s porous and stains easily.

Ceramic

Ceramic kitchen floor tiles are made from clay that is formed and molded under pressure and heat to create the tile.

Non-Porcelain and Porcelain

Traditional ceramic tiles are non-porcelain. This means they’re made from clay and other minerals. Porcelain ceramic is made from the same materials, but it also contains 50% feldspar dust. Feldspar helps bond all of the materials together during the manufacturing process.

Different clays, materials, and manufacturing processes are used to create the variations in color and aesthetic that you see in ceramic tiles. They are also usually glazed with a matte, semi-gloss, or high-glaze finish, which protects them from stains and water in the kitchen.

Porcelain tiles are more expensive than non-porcelain, but they’re also more resistant to stains and water absorption. They also have more consistent coloring. But if you’re on a budget, non-porcelain tiles are still a good kitchen tile flooring material.
