Should You Choose an Open or Closed Kitchen Design?

One of the first decisions you’ll have to make when it comes to remodeling your kitchen is whether you want an open or closed kitchen design. Do you want your kitchen to open up into other rooms of the house, such as the family room, creating a seamless transition from one room to the other? Or do you want a more traditional kitchen that is not a part of another room in the house? There are pros and cons to both, but in the end, your decision will come down to what you’re working with, and personal preference. Read on to learn whether you should choose an open or closed kitchen design.

Open Kitchen Design

Open kitchens became popular in the 1990s, and have only been gaining in popularity since then. This design connects the kitchen with another room like the living or family room. There’s no wall between the two, which creates a more open space in the home.

Naturally, one of the main things people like about open kitchens is the feeling of space and volume it creates. This is especially useful in a smaller home. Open kitchens also facilitate conversation between family and guests by keeping everyone in the same general space. In addition, the lack of walls means more natural light can travel through the home.

Closed Kitchen Design

The classic kitchen design, closed kitchens are their own room, separated from other rooms by a wall. The advantages to this include, for one, greater storage space. The additional wall creates much more storage space, countertop space, and space for appliances. It also creates a more defined space for cooking, which you may prefer depending on your cooking style. If you prefer to cook without interruption, a closed kitchen design may be better for your needs.
