How to Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

small bathroom

Use simple colors with relatively little contrast to make your small bathroom feel larger.

Are you stuck with a small bathroom? You don’t have to feel confined or claustrophobic. There are a number of things you can do to make your bathroom space seem that much larger. Some solutions are easy and inexpensive, while others will require a little more planning and remodeling. Here are a few ways you can make your small bathroom feel bigger.

Fixtures

Standard bathtubs are about 60×32 inches. You may want to consider replacing yours if it is larger than that. A lower-walled bathtub can help give you the illusion of more space. If a couple square feet isn’t worth the cost of replacing your bathtub, another alternative is to install a clear shower door. A clear door without any ornate designs will remove the visual barriers that block light and make your bathroom feel more cramped.

Toilet

Toilets often take up more space than is necessary, especially older toilets. Most new toilets hitting the market today are designed to take up less space while remaining just as functional. As an extra bonus, newer toilet models also tend to use less water, which can save up to $90 on annual water costs.

Sink

Wall-mounted and pedestal sinks take up less room, making your bathroom feel more spacious and cozy. Remember, the more visible floor space in the room, the more spacious it’s going to feel. Suspended cabinetry instead of standard vanity will also help you achieve this.

Lighting

In a small room, light is incredibly important. You’ll want to get as much natural light into your space as possible, and a skylight can help do just that. If you have any dark corners in your bathroom, you’ll need to illuminate them. You can install shelves in these areas not only to give yourself some extra storage space, but provide another opportunity for lighting.

Mirrors

A well placed mirror adds a ton of depth to a room. A good idea is to position mirrors across from windows as that will create the illusion of more space within your bathroom. If you don’t have a window, consider installing mirrors across from one another instead. When combined with lots of light, this trick will make your bathroom feel much more spacious.

Color

Simplicity should be your goal when it comes to using color in a small bathroom space. Too many patterns or busy colors draw attention to your eye and make the bathroom seem cramped. Stick to monochromatic color schemes and veer away from contrasts that will break up your space.
