How to Prevent Mildew From Building Up in the Bathroom

Mildew loves warm, humid, dark places, which is why it thrives in crevices in your bathroom. While it might not be possible to totally eliminate mildew from your bathroom, there are a few steps you can take to prevent it.

Keep Your Bathroom Dry and the Mildew Will Die

Try to keep the bathroom as dry as possible. Use the ventilation fan to draw steam out of the bathroom, and leave it on for a little while after you shower. Squeegee water off the shower walls to remove much of the water that supports mildew growth. Seal the grout in your tile to waterproof them, mildew loves the spaces in old worn out grout. Don’t leave bottles of shampoo sitting on the side of the tub, because they make great places for mildew to grow. Use a mildew-resistant shower curtain, though even these may eventually get mildew on them. Wash or replace them to reduce the amount of spores in the bathroom, and wash your bathroom rugs frequently for the same reason.
