Bathroom Faucets and Fixtures: Choosing the Finish and Metal

When you think of remodeling your bathroom, your mind might not immediately land on what kind of metal and finish you want to use for your bathroom fixtures. But this is actually one of the more important decisions you’ll make in the planning process. The metal and finish style you choose for your faucet serves as a template for all of the other metal fixtures in the bathroom, because they’ll all have to match to look consistent. Who would have thought that a faucet could have such a big effect on the look of a bathroom?

That being said, it’s not an easy choice to make. There are lots of different metals and finishes to choose from when looking at bathroom faucets and fixtures. So we’re going to use this week’s blog to talk about them! This blog will focus on the faucet, because choosing the right metal and finish for this component has functional significance, not just stylistic. Learn more below.

Bathroom Faucets and Fixtures

Faucet Metals

Brass

Brass faucets are durable and highly resistant to corrosion or leaks. They are usually the most expensive, but many bathroom remodelers find they’re worth the investment.

Steel

Steel faucets can be a good choice if you invest in a good quality model. Cheap ones will probably corrode and rust sooner or later. Stainless steel faucets are also a good option.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the cheaper metal faucets, but the low price usually reflects the low quality of these faucets.

Faucet Finishes

Chrome

This is the kind of finish you see in most bathrooms. Chrome never seems to go out of style, making it a good choice for bathroom remodelers who have selling in mind. Chrome finishes are tough and resistant to scratches on the outside. However, chrome can’t protect the inside of the faucet, which means corrosion can occur from the inside out.

Brass

The color of brass is a nice alternative to the silver of chrome. But be prepared to invest some time in cleaning to keep a brass faucet looking good.

Bronze

Bronze finishes offer another alternative to silver chrome. Special coatings are available for bronze finishes that help them resist scratches and corrosion.

Nickel

Nickel finishes are more expensive, but they’re very durable and have a pleasing color that also helps hide fingerprints and water spots.
